While Halloween has been underway since early September for some of us, October is the official start of the spooky season for many. One of the easiest and most fun ways to get into the right frame of mind is by sitting down with a big bowl of candy corn and your favorite adult beverage to enjoy some scary movies and TV shows!
Every Tuesday in October I’ll be running down some of the best spooooky releases coming to home media.
To find out what’s coming this week, read on!
All release info is from the excellent Blu-ray.com.
10/9
Trick ‘r Treat (2007) – Shout Factory – This is now considered a Halloween classic in the Phantom Zone and is watched every year. If for some reason you don’t own it, this Scream Factory release will for sure be the way to go.
If, however, you do already own this gem on Blu-ray, click here to see if the added features give you enough reason to upgrade. It all sounds good, but I’m sticking with the copy we own.
House on Haunted Hill (1999) – Shout Factory – I adore the Dark Castle movies and am hoping that Scream Factory will be following this release up with Thir13en Ghosts, Ghost Ship, and House of Wax. I preordered this the second I found out about it and we’re just waiting for the right spooky night to revisit it.
If you preorder direct from Shout Factory your movies will arrive up to two weeks (sometimes more!) prior to the release date.
The Evil Dead 4K (1981) – Lionsgate Films – I bought Evil Dead on Blu-ray when it was first released and it just didn’t look right to me. I’m not saying I need all the lines and fuzz of a VHS tape that’s been watched hundreds of times, but the clean transfer just didn’t sit right with me.
Halloween II (1981) Steelbook – Shout Factory – I’m a sucker for Steelbooks, but I already own Shout Factory’s incredible Halloween box set, so I’m going to pass on this one. If you don’t own it, though, this is the same excellent version included with that box set.
Halloween III (1982) Steelbook – Shout Factory – See above.
The Unnamable (1988) – Unearthed Films – I know I watched this movie on TBS or USA or whatever back in the day, but I can’t say I remember it. The plot involves a group of youths who stay in a haunted house. It’s based on an HP Lovecraft story, which makes me somewhat interested in revisiting.
Hotel Transylvania 3 (2018) – Sony Pictures – We loved the first one, but I didn’t care for the sequel. The trailer for this installment looks promising and I have heard good things about it, so I’m hoping they tightened up a little bit and got back on track. We’ll certainly be watching this one Phantom Phamily night.
Constantine: City of Demons (2018) – Warner Bros. – This was originally one of those miniseries on the CW Seed. It utilizes Matt Ryan as Constantine and ties directly into the Arrowverse. But from what I can tell it consists of 5 episodes that last 6-7 minutes each, which means the full runtime is between thirty and forty-five minutes. And they’re charging around twenty bucks for this.
I don’t think so.
Deadly Crush (2018) – Parade Deck Films – “When a painter rents a secluded cabin to jump start her creativity, she has sex with a ghost and finds herself part of his wicked plan to bring itself back to life…”
WTF. This isn’t available on Amazon and I can’t seem to find it listed anywhere. BluRay.com lists it with “HorrorPack Exclusive #25” in the heading, so I guess I’m going to have to find out what that means because I guaran-damn-tee you that I will be watching this movie this month.
UPDATE: Never guaran-damn-mind. You have to sign up for some Columbia House-style subscription service. I’ll wait for Deadly Crush to show up on Amazon Prime.
Bloodlust (1977) – Mondo Macabro – Also known as Mosquito – Der Schänder. “A deaf and dumb accountant suffers from a psychic trauma in his childhood. He is collecting puppets and mutilates female bodies in the mortuary. After his secret love died by an accident he starts to kill.”
Along Came the Devil (2018) – Gravitas Ventures – This film stars Madison Lintz (Sophia from The Walking Dead) and doesn’t even warrant a mention on her Wikipedia page. Or much of anywhere else online, which should tell you all you need to know. It sounds like a sub-par demonic possession tale that I’d probably skip if I found it on Netflix.
10/12
All of the… Malevolence? Movies – I know I’ve seen these titles on streaming services and I may have even watched the first one. I just had no idea that the franchise was so goshdarn huge it would prevent there being any other horror releases on the same day.
Oh, wait – these are coming out on a Friday. For some reason. Some malevolent reason.
Be sure to check back next week for more spooky releases!
