Well, it’s just over a month until Dragon Con. What does that mean? First, it means that I need to start drinking Emergen-C right freaking now. It also means that there are some status reports, updates, and press releases I need to get out into the world. Guests are still being added, and track schedules are far from finalized (drink if you even thought about asking when the app would be updated). There are still lots of exciting things that we do know so far. I’m gonna clear out a few updates and press releases before getting into the guests I really want to see this year. So much going on, and so little time before the party starts. I can’t believe that this will be my fifth year as a Dragon Con reporter. It seems like just yesterday I was taking “calming” shots to settle my nerves before my first interview. My nerves still get a little shaky even after all this time. I’ve never been to San Diego Comic Con and I can’t foresee a time when it will ever be practical for me to attend, but I do follow the excitement from afar every year.
As an avid fan of pop culture and toys in particular, SDCC is like a blitzkrieg of delight that assaults my mind and my wallet. Film studios and toy manufacturers drop years’ worth of news in the span of a few days. It’s a lot, and if you’re like me it’s helpful to have a place to distill it down to the best stuff.
That’s what Needless Things is for.
Today I’ll be writing about all of the coolest toy news from this year’s Comic Con. Then, for the next two Fridays, you’ll be able to hear me and our pop culture experts Ryan and Jay discuss toys, movies, and more on the Needless Things Podcast!
I’ve included pictures where I can, but mostly just official releases when the companies have put them out (which they have gotten much better about since I started doing these). Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman changed Hollywood forever. The merchandising and marketing were unlike anything that the world had seen before, with Warner Bros. pushing the movie so strongly that it almost had to be a success.
And it certainly was.
While the movie itself merits hours of conversation, Needless Things Irregulars Dave West, Ryan Cadaver, Nicole Ghouled-Cadaver, and Chad J. Shonk presented this panel to a live Atlanta Comic Con audience to take a focused look at the cultural phenomenon surrounding the movie’s release.
From the shirts, toys, trading cards, stationary, and pool toys to the endless periodicals detailing every aspect of the film’s production, the team shares their fondest memories of that singular point in time.
