Needless Things Podcast 271 – 1989

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-vazvp-b5022f

The dynamite team of Dave West, Beth V, Rad Ranger, and Chris DePetrillo reunite to look thirty years into the past!

1989 was a remarkable year for pop culture, most notably thanks to the Summer of the Bat! But that conversation will happen at another Bat-time in another Bat-venue. In this episode we’re looking at everything in 1989 other than Tim Burton’s film phenomenon.
As part of an annual tradition, Dave gathered some of the Needless Things Irregulars to reflect on the pop culture that made us who we are today. From Zack Morris to Joan Collins to Mike Patton, this week’s episode travels back to a time when things were far more awesome!
Listen in as Beth, Dave, Sean, and Chris discuss their favorite – and not-so-favorite – pop culture from 1989!

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Yep, I’m reviewing a movie that came out almost a month ago. And really the main reason is that I wasn’t too excited about it at first. I didn’t care for the super slow and serious Godzilla of 2014, and Kong: Skull Island was merely worth the price of a Redbox rental. What convinced me to finally go and see it? The crappy reviews of course. Critics seemed to dislike Godzilla: King of the Monsters because it didn’t have enough plot or human drama. Those are precisely the things I don’t want in a monster movie so I finally got off my ass last weekend to check it out. I’m assuming that you’ve either seen it by now or don’t care enough if I give spoilers. Continue reading “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”

Toy Review – One:12 Collective Blade from Mezco

I’m never afraid to admit things that might shame a standard dork. For instance, I pretty much only know Blade from the movies.

I’ve read comics where he guest-starred here and there, but haven’t ever really sought the character out in print form. In my defense he hasn’t exactly headlined a whole lot of books. Or maybe that doesn’t work in my defense, since there isn’t much to track down.

Whatever the case with the comics, I love the movies. The first Blade was something completely different than any other comic book or horror movie. It was absolutely the coolest movie released in 1998. The combination of style, gore, action, intense music, and a fantastic cast set it apart from comic book movies and horror movies. The pop culture world truly embraced Wesley Snipes as the Daywalker, to the extent that he and the character have become synonymous.

Just take a look at any comic representation of Blade since then.

Which is why, despite the fact that this isn’t a movie Blade, it totally looks like movie Blade aside from the likeness.

I don’t want to disregard the Blade TV show that starred rapper Sticky Fingaz in the titular role. I watched the pilot and couldn’t really get into it, but I’ve heard that the thirteen episodes turned out to be pretty good.

While I’ve got a beautiful sixth scale movie Blade from Toy Biz’ surprisingly excellent Marvel Studios line, I needed a great 6” Daywalker; even if it wasn’t Snipes.

Did Mezco’s release scratch that figure itch or will I have to track down the old movie figures? Read on and find out! Continue reading “Toy Review – One:12 Collective Blade from Mezco”

Needless Things Podcast 270 – The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Needless Commentary

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-2w45v-b4feed

Part of an ongoing series – the Needless Things Irregulars gather in the Phantom Zone to provide their own unique commentary on classic genre films!

What better way to kick off another Needless Summer than with a trip to the ocean with Steve Zissou?

This month’s Commentary was chosen by Ryan Cadaver, but is mutually adored throughout the team. Bill Murray leads one of the most remarkable casts ever assembled in what might be Wes Anderson’s most mainstream and watchable film. While the trademark unique, quirky style is present in abundance, The Life Aquatic’s narrative is fast-paced and perhaps more of a standard cinematic storytelling experience than any other Anderson film.

Listen in as Dave, Arian, Ryan, and Nicole raid the Hennessey Sea Lab for this month’s Needless Commentary!

2019 Augusta Toy and Comic Show

Just a couple of months ago I stumbled across the website for the Augusta Toy and Comic Show.

I was planning a trip to Wilmington, North Carolina to see my family and just happened to notice something about this convention on Facebook. I thought “Hmmm, June” and then I thought “Oh – Augusta” and checked the dates just to see if anything lined up. Sure enough, this show takes place the weekend we were going to be leaving for Wilmington. And Augusta, if you don’t know, is in between Atlanta and Wilmington.

Good Omens – The Series Review

I waited a long time for this show to come out. It was one of the things I was most looking forward to this year, and it didn’t disappoint. You don’t have to have read the 1990 novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman to enjoy the show Good Omens. It helps give you a deeper understanding, but it isn’t necessary. Gaiman has made the show different enough from the book that even if you just read it yesterday you won’t know exactly what’s going to happen. I don’t want to ruin anything for those of you who haven’t read/watched it yet. What follows isn’t really a review as much as a list of all the reasons you should just shut up and watch it. And then go read the book. Continue reading “Good Omens – The Series Review”
