The Skywalker saga may be over, but there are enough books to keep Star Wars fans satisfied for years to come. Chad, Ryan, and Beth have started a series to keep you up to date on all the action. Join our book club as we run down the best that canon, legends, and comics have to offer.

A ragtag group of heroes going up against a seemingly unstoppable force may sound like a trope. It is, but it’s a trope that works well in the Star Wars universe. The problem with the first book of a series is that you can sometimes spend a little too much time in set up. Whether that’s true or not for Alphabet Squadron is a matter of personal opinion, but there are some good things going on here. Plus, if you’re like Beth and haven’t gotten through the Aftermath series yet this is a time period you won’t have seen in the new canon before.

Star Wars movies love to just jump right into the thick of things, often without telling us how we got from point A to point B. That’s where novels come in handy. Today we’re taking a look at the novel that bridges the gap between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. If you feel like Wedge was robbed by only getting two seconds of screen time in The Rise of Skywalker then this might be the perfect book for you.

We got a little out of order in our excitement to post the Ahsoka episode. Master and Apprentice explores the difficult relationship between Qui-Gon Jinn and his young padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi as they try to save a planet and princess in peril. Along the way we also learn more about Qui-Gon and his former master Count Dooku. Join us for a thrill ride into far off space with terrorists, jewel thieves, and galactic politics. Okay so maybe the politics are so thrilling, but it’s still a great book.

Fans have been hearing about the possibility of live action Star Wars television shows for decades. In November of 2019, as part of the launch of Disney’s new streaming service, we finally got one. While not on a network or even cable, The Mandalorian, is a weekly episodic series that eschews the saga of the Skywalkers and examines life in a galaxy far, far away from a different perspective.

Listen in as Dave and the Execute Chapter 66 crew (minus Beth, who was recovering from a fight with a mudhorn) discuss the premiere season of The Mandalorian on the newest episode of the Needless Things Podcast!

Part of an ongoing series – the Needless Things Irregulars gather in the Phantom Zone to provide their own unique commentary on classic genre films!

Special guests Dan Kelly and Evil Jim join the Commentary Team for the legendary 1981 animated feature Heavy Metal!
A truly magnificent feat of genre storytelling, Heavy Metal features the talents of John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Rodger Bumpass, Eugene Levy, Harold Ramis, Marilyn Lightstone, and dozens more providing voices for some of the most striking and innovative animation of the era. A phenomenal team of artists brought life to stories from Dan O’Bannon, Richard Corben, Bernie Wrightson and more; all set to a driving soundtrack that deserves its own paragraph:
As if the animation and voice acting weren’t accomplishment enough, the filmmakers compiled an amazing selection of pure rock to accompany the visuals – Sammy Hagar, Devo, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath, and Grand Funk Railroad are just a few of the bands that contributed to the aural power of the film, while the incredible Elmer Bernstein provided the score!

Needless Things Podcast 252 – Alita: Battle Angel

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-ddfp3-a7e91f

Dave, Ryan Cadaver, and Nicole Ghouled caught an early sneak preview of Robert Rodriguez’ adaptation of the classic manga, Battle Angel Alita this past Monday. All three were so enthralled by and impressed with the movie that they had to get together to discuss it for this week’s episode of the Needless Things Podcast!

Starting with the manga in 1990 and then the animated adaptation in 1993, the story of this warrior has been inspiring fans for decades. Battle Angel draws from many classic genre styles while retaining a unique voice and style of its own. Those same inspired fans have been curious about a live action adaptation, and when James Cameron announced his intention to create one, things seemed promising.
The production process, however, was a long one. This left many doubting the project would ever truly see the light of day. But then the pieces starting coming together, with the unparalleled Robert Rodriguez as director, Rosa Salazar as the titular cyborg, and perhaps most impressively, Cristoph Waltz as Dr. Ido.
With such a promising team assembled, the ambitious film was a go and is now ready to be unleashed upon the world to inspire a whole new generation!
Listen in as Dave, Ryan, and Nicole break down this compelling cyberpunk fairytale!
